11/11/2008Save Garnock Pool! Sign a petition now
K.A Leisure have put forward a proposal to cut opening times at Garnock Pool by 25 hours per week, they intend to reduce the staffing levels.
I believe this could be the first step to the closure of this important part of the community! Please sign petitions in your local shops.
I've started a page for the Save Garnock Pool petition where you can find a form to print out, fill with signatures and return to Katy Clark MP.

Children use this facility on regular basis - What about the government's drive to increase activity in children to help the fight against Scotland's obesity problem. I am a mother of four myself and my children regularly use Garnock Pool.
I will most definately sign the petition. I also know people who travel from Lochwinnoch to use Kilbirnie's facilities, Tesco, Garnock Pool and the dentist. In addition, reducing staffing levels in this current climate is outrageous, we need people in jobs.

People from all over the Garnock Valley use Garnock Swimming Pool and it is a great shame if the council cut back the hours at this public facility. There is a lack of good quality leisure facilities in the Garnock Valley, so this is a big kick in the teeth. I am a user of Garnock Pool and it also provides a health benefit to those who are disabled, elderly or have had illnesses such like stroke victims have been recommended by their GP for exercise.
The only way this pool remained opened at its usual hours is to get more people to use it. I know the staff who work at the pool and this will hurt them more than the people who use the facility. Please s1 can you put this news item on the s1dalry website too and maybe an online petition soon as possible could be arranged. Thank you.
This is a blow for those who want Scottish people to get fit and healthy and goes against the ethos of the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014. If we don't use it then we will lose it.
- What happened to joined up government. Government should be increasing funding for local services not cutting them again and again. I for one would rather have local facilities and services than a council tax freeze. This won't save money in the long run, we'll end up having to pay more to health services to deal with obesity through lack of excerise.

My son goes to the sharks, if they cut the facilities my son and all the kids in the sharks will lose out. Apart from that there is nothing else for the kids in Kilbirnie and surrounding areas to do.
Garnock Pool keeps the kids off the streets and keeps them out of trouble. Swimming is supposed to be the best exercise there is, so why are they closing most of the facilities, aren't they worried about childhood obesity !!!!!!!!!!!!
- Keep the pool.. It all went wrong when the Sauna closed at the pool. Many elderly people (70+) used the facility and when the Sauna closed there was no where for them to go (Radio City was a poor substitute, not every person wants to use a Gym) now the Pool, ...what next. Keep it open and re-instate a sauna, take out the gym and replace it with a steam room. Those who want to use a Gym can go to Radio City. Keep the choice for the local community.
- Hi, I actually posted the first comment here but forgot to signin lol, anyway I like what Ian's saying but could we go further to suggesting some form of collaboration between Radio City and Garnock Pool by utilising the best of both facilities for the community keep every one in a job, keep children exercising, keep the elderly using community facilities.
- North Ayrshire Council are so wrong in cutting back the opening hours at this leisure facility. I find it hard to understand their motives on why they make so many unpopular decisions that effect so many people. Where is this Council's socialist prinicipals? Are they a socialist council who should be providing the whole community with decent leisuire facilities such as a swimming pool for the health benefits of the community and not for profit? It will get to the stage we would would have to be rich to own our own swimming pools because public swimming will become a thing of the past. Get rid of the accountants or councillors who propose this nonsense of cutbacks.
- One worrying aspect will kids and some adults start to use local rivers or Kilbirnie Loch where it is dangerous and will have no supervision such as lifeguards instead of getting to use their local pool.
- You need to remember the council don't run the pools any more, they just pay ka leisure to provide the service.KA leisure have their own board and management and have to balance the books.
- To save Garnock Pool, we need to increase the numbers to go through the doors, the more who use the centre the more less likely they will cut back the hours or close it down. To everyone who lives in the whole of the Garnock Valley Community please use it. It is true what is said you don't miss it until it's gone. It is your local swimming pool please use it, and it also contains a very good gym and sunbed rooms. It may also be very beneficial to you or your family's health and will be fun. If you don't use it then jobs and the whole centre will be at risk from closure. I use it and it is very reasonably priced and there is discounts available for those on benefits as well. So its in your hands to use it now!
