Where will they get the money for that, is this for real?

jeeni bee says

There's no money for it, don't kid yourself, it's just shiney, shiney, to keep your eye off what's really going on, severe cuts in the services that support the most vulnerable people in our communities.

This to me is the most interesting line within the meeting report.

"It is anticipated that the SFT funding will not be available until around 2012/13."

jeeni bee says

The Scottish Futures Trust (an advisory body) has been spending 2k a day since it was pulled together on consultants to 'advise' them on how they should move forward - to date it has had no involvement with any projects that have had a tangible result.
All this is just dancing the dance - we all need to get real and ask ourselves - 'what can I do to make the changes that matter to me' - because no-one else is about to do it - the powers that be are just keeping us distracted with what might be - someday...........

Some people are just pre-disposed with negativity it would seem!

That's all good but what happens in the classroom is what matters I went to that school and not that long ago the teachers and children are the problem. teachers have no idea how to hold the concentration of a child or how to control them then there's the issue of them treating everyone the same there are troublemakers in every school yes but they have no idea to spot the difference from a troublemaker and a child that is struggling and the only way I concentrated at school and got on with my work is if I respected the teacher and to be honest was scared of them to a degree. School to children is boring so why not solve the problem not a lot of money needed some common sense and getting the children involved in lessons and some passion for learning.

Would closing down Garnock Pool in the Public Park and relocating it to the new Garnock Academy Campus not restrict the amount of hours the general puiblic can use the pool? Also is it cost effective to knock down two modern schools that have hardly been erected in Kilbirnie & Glengarnock to build one school. That sounds a complete waste of money to me. Couldn't other sports facilities that are currently not available be built at school like tennis courts for example so that the current schools could be kept open?

elzabeth benivon says

al i will say if theres a public swimming pool in the middle of a school campus i would not be comfortable with my child going there with strangers trapsing in and out the pool and how would they keep pupils safe etc if anyone could walk in school grounds .NO COMMON SENSE !!!!

Billy Long says

Exactly Elzabeth, there's no need for it and the swimming pool should be kept exactly where it is. The money spent in revamping the swimming pool recently and the small pool added to the main building cost the taxpayer a lot of money. You would not like someone like an unknown sex offender to be walking onto a school campus to use a swimming pool. It is not right.

The fact is Moorpark & Glengarnock Primaries do not need replacing as they are relatively new modern buildings and the current swimming pool was opened in the late 1960's. So they are hardly needing replaced already. The new school could provide the Garnock Valley with new sports facilities that it doesn't have like tennis or basketball or a cricket pitch or something like an athletic surface.

Steven says

One of my children is at Glengarnock Primary and I think the school has to be the worst school ever designed the whole place is too small, all the ground available and they build that inadequate building in the middle. The assembly hall is too small, classrooms are open plan with small partitions separating the classes. Another issue with a new super school is that in my opinion Glengarnock can't seem to deal with bullying and they can't seem to control the troublemakers properly, but I believe that other parents have noticed this concern as well so it could be an issue with the head/assistant head not addressing the situations correctly. If issues like this can't get dealt with in small schools what chance do we have at a super school?

elzabeth benivon says

i agree i went to glengarnock diffrent head and i was bullied it was nipped in the bud straight away by the head unfortunately after years he no longer is there . it was small and cramped but it was a good school and me and my classmates werent really bothered it never effected our learning, although the running of it makes all the diffrence if troublemakers are dealt with quickly and efficiently the particions etc werent a problem but in the middle of chaos it must be terrible to concentrate etc when classes arent running smoothly and theres obviously a question of the heads capability etc , its a shame had a great reputaton , but i will think twice now about sending my chilld there. I seriously doubt that it will work plus do we really want young children mixing with older ones , i remember smoking drinking and others taking drugs in that school unoticed so that would be a real concern would our children pick up on this behaviour sooner of course they would to be honest its quite scary to think about it you just have to think how many times a week do you see a police car there i work from home not far from there and it is a very regular occurence ! gd idea but not very well thought out at all .

P Smith says

With regards to the post added by Steven, I also have a child who attends Glengarnock Primary and yes I agree the school could have been better designed, but disagree totally on your views that Glengarnock can't deal with bullying, I believe the school has a very efficient Discipline Policy. I have spoken to both the Depute and Headmistress on the occasions that I have had any concerns regarding my child's educational welfare and found them both to be very approachable, they have responded with an understanding manner and taken seriously any concerns raised. My concerns have been followed through and the outcome has always met my satisfaction. My child is very happy at Glengarnock as was his sibling before him, yes the building may be inadequate but the standard of education, citizenship and community awareness provided by the staff there is of high quality.

Re Elzbeth Benivon, you were very quick on the mark to take on board Steven's comments regarding his issues with Glengarnock, to the extent that you will now think twice on sending your child to Glengarnock, hopefully I've added a flip side to Steven's comment if not it may explain your fears in your "post how do we keep our children safe" begin by basing your thoughts on more than the first opinion you read, as a parent it's our job to weigh up opinions and help our children make the choices that steer them through life. What kind of adults will they make if they are reared on fear that society is full of violence and abuse. We educate them on rights and wrongs, we make sure they are aware of their rights and we allow them to grow into a society where hopefully the will be well equipped to cope.
