15/11/2008Kilbirnie Pool concerns expressed by MP
Katy Clark MP has voiced concern over future plans for Garnock Swimming Pool.
Speaking on the matter, Katy said, "I am extremely concerned that there are proposals to reduce the hours at Garnock swimming pool and that in particular that there are proposals to cut the hours for the small pool. We should be doing everything we can to encourage kids to take exercise and be encouraging free swimming rather than cutting hours. I am also extremely concerned about the proposal to take away reception staff which are essential for security and to supervise kids using the facilities. I strongly urge North Ayrshire Leisure to reconsider their decision to reduce services in this way."
She continued, "Just some of the benefits of this facility include swimming lessons for the community and rehabilitation for those who are suffering from injuries or physical disorders. I would be greatly disappointed if my constituents were deprived this facility and I hope these proposals go no further."
- Kilbirnie and Beith councillors Jean Highgate and John Bell have demanded KA Leisure rethink their proposals to reduce opening hours and reception cover at Garnock Pool, in a letter to KA Leisure Chief Executive Frank Keddilty. The councillors raise concerns about the security of pool users, the lack of consultation with users groups. They also point out the installation of a new play facility in front of the pool and the opportunity to expand pool usage which would be lost if hours are cut.
- Why would anyone trust the concerns of Jean Highgate, when she had the casting vote that ensured the warden service for pensioners was refused reinstatement, shame on her. And well John Bell, I am not going to comment on Mr Bell as he always seems to be strangely silent on most matters Kilbirnie based, over the years I have noticed that very fact from Mr Bell, funny how North Ayrshire seems to stop at Kilwinning isn't it.
- Strange views, I would rather have hard working councillors that get on with the job than attention seeking primadonnas that do sod all for the community.
