Kilbirnie Main Street closed over two months to allow improvements

by Rebecca Garrett

Kilbirnie's Main Street will be closed over two months to allow improvement works to take place.

Last year, s1kilbirnie reported that the town was to undergo a massive makeover starting in January - estimated at more than £200,000.

As of later this month, significant improvements will be made to the town centre, tying in with the regeneration work taking place there.

The Main Street will be resurfaced while improved street lighting is installed.

In order to ensure the safety of members of the public and roads staff, the Main Street will need to be closed throughout Sunday, January 22 and from Sunday, January 29 until Sunday, February 5 or until the work is completed if this is earlier.

Diversion routes will be in place while the work is being carried out.

North Ayrshire Council would like to apologise in advance for any disruption this may cause.

It is not clear to me from the above where the 2 month time scale comes from ?

It would appear to me that the works will take 2 months but the actual closures will be for one day and then 2 weeks, for road surfacing there would never be a need to close the full main street for 2 months as you plane and surface one lane, with the other lane controlled by temporary lights and then you switch over

Rebecca Garrett says

Hi Norman and Donald. It will be closed 'over' two months, not 'for' two months. Perhaps I was a bit unlear. Sorry for any confusion!

Do NAC ever consider the residents of Mill rd,Knoxville rd and Paddockholm road when they divert the traffic from the main street.

The increased volume of traffic is not only a nuisance but it has serious Safety issues.

Besides surely regeneration should involve opening some actual shops in the main street rather than fast food outlets.

More importantly the traffic interferes with my telly signal.

Donald Cunninghame says

It will actually be closed "over" 2 weeks then

That's the first day of the planned Main Street closure over. I saw that there were no parking cones the length of the diversion from the Cross all the way to Holmhead which makes sense especially for lorries and buses. Couldn't believe the number of cars and a van that were parked between the cones on Knoxville Road especially at that bend!!!

It will be closed FOR 2 weeks, OVER 2 months.

Donald Cunninghame says

Sunday January 22nd until Sunday 5th February is two weeks, it will not be closed FOR the whole duration though so will be closed OVER 2 weeks, not OVER 2 months. It will actually be closed FOR one week and one day.

I'm learning to drive and have found that there is a lot of people who dont seem to understand what a no parking cone is, or a double yellow line is for. There has been several cars and vans who park in between the cones all along the diverson route. It makes me wonder why the DSM is so tough on the theory now when there are so many drivers who would fail both tests in todays DSM. There are plent of parking spaces around here and yet people still have to park on a double yellow. WHY?

What i meant was, closed FOR 2 weeks in total, SPREAD OVER               2 months.

Well we waited all this time to get the main street resurfaced and what do we get patches all over the road the roads crumbling already the roads department need to look at the shoddy workmanship been carried out so i suppose it will be more closures to repair the poor surface thats just been laid shocking but then who cares its only Kilbirnie The roads engineer wants to have a word with himself or the contractors not acceptable

David MacGregor says

I do hope when the work is complete the Police enforce the no parking on double yellow lines

nicola symonds says

I agree with you David MacGregor, as I said earlier, as a learner its not easy to do as you are suppose to do and see many others disregard the Highway Code just to suit them. It makes for more hazards and dangers on the road than there already is.
