Kilbirnie continues town centre makeover in New Year

by Rebecca Garrett

Plans for a major makeover of Kilbirnie’s town centre will continue in the New Year.

Two months ago (September, 2011), s1kilbirnie reported that work had already started on regenerating the centre – a project which is estimated to cost more than £200,000.

The next stage of improvement works will begin in January 2012 and these will include:

  • An upgraded puffin crossing in Newton Street
  • Newton Street road resurfacing
  • Wall mounted lighting
  • New bins and bollards
  • Extension of paving at Bridge Street
  • Improvements at Maybole Bridge

The local authority decided to wait until the New Year before completing the street lighting and puffin crossing to allow work to coincide with road resurfacing and minimise the impact on businesses and people using the town centre.

According to the council, the Economic Development Shop Front Grant scheme - which brightens up shop premises -will also continue to encourage local people to shop in their town.

Meanwhile, the new Shop Local campaign hopes to encourage people to get their lunch, buy essentials or simply have a stroll in town.

As part of the campaign, residents will be posted a newsletter this month (December 2011), which they can use to claim a free Kilbirnie Cares shopping bag in town centre shops.

Councillor John Reid, spokesman for regeneration, said: “We are already getting lots of positive feedback about the work which has taken place in Kilbirnie.

“Local shops have taken advantage of the Shop Front Grant Scheme while major improvements have been made to the likes of Newton Street car park and Bridge Street.

“The town centre will now get new street lighting, an upgraded pedestrian crossing, new bins, bollards and road resurfacing.

“I’m sure that local people will appreciate the huge difference when they take a walk in a couple of month’s time.”

What do you think about the £200,000 development to Kilbirnie town centre? Is it worth the money? Or do you think cash should be spent on something else in the community?

Really good to see the investment coming forward for Kilbirnie. The new schools, flood prevention and the town centre clean up are welcome and necessary.
