4/2/2010Green fingers at the ready: Have you joined our Green Gym yet?
The Kilbirnie Green Gym, funded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran, is a partnership between the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), Bridgend Community Centre, NHS Ayrshire & Arran, Radio City and the Kilbirnie Allotment Group. The gym aims to promote the health and well being of people taking part by engaging them in practical environmental and gardening activities.
A BTCV officer will work with the group of volunteers for three to four hours a week to develop their practical skills and to make sure they are working safely. The main aim is to create a sensory garden for everyone to enjoy, at the ground beside Bridgend Community Centre in Kilbirnie.
The Green Gym is open to people of all ages and from all walks of life, but we really want to involve people who are particularly at risk of poor physical and / or mental health.
Grace Moore MBE, Assistant Director of Public Health - NHS Ayrshire & Arran, explains: "We want to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Ayrshire and Arran and projects like the Kilbirnie Green Gym show people that there are alternatives to taking part in sports or going to a gym to keep fit. Low impact activities such as gardening can also improve over-all fitness and build a person's confidence."
