28/8/2008Glengarnock Post Office

The Post Office have said they want to close Glengarnock Post Office. This will put the only local shop at risk and locals don't all have cars to get to Garden City or Beith.

The Post Office in Glengarnock is one of 44 Post Office branches proposed for closure under the Ayrshire, Inverclyde, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire Area Plan.

At a recent meeting about the closure of the Baird Avenue Post Office in Kilwinning, Councillor John Ferguson said: "The cunsultation period ends on September 1, so it's vital to write in now or, for those who have already done so, to persuade a friend or neighbour to write in and add their opposition."

The six-week public consultation period began on 22 July 2008 and all representations should be received by 1 September 2008.

I live in Dalry, so I feel sorry for the local people in Glengarnock who will lose their sub-post office, especially the most vunerable like elderly and disabled. It sadly is a reflection of the times we live in now that dictate if a service is profitable or a loss-maker. Sadly this must be the case here, but it is not far to the next one at the Garden City and these people whom I mentioned above will have mobility cars or free bus passes to help them get there, if not family or friends to help them. I wish it could remain open as it is a vital community asset, but isn't that better to close one when there's 2 close by on a main bus route rather than a main & only post office in a rural community elsewhere remains open? Most people now get their pensions and benefits through their bank accounts and pay their bills through direct debit. This is the reason so many are closing unless the communites can buy the business back and run the post-offices themselves.
