FAB - RI - CREATORS: Sewing, Creative Stitching and Craft at the Bridgend Community Centre

FAB-RI-CREATORS of KILBIRNIE
At the moment there are three closely affiliated groups active:

The Sew'n'Sews, who specialise in patchwork and quilting, making quilts for friends and family and also for charities.

The Creative Stitchers, who specialise in yard and textile crafts especially knitting and embroidery;

and The Crafty Woman who are more wide-ranging in their approach and use.

They all have the skills to make items which can be sold at various fetes to raise money for charity. Based at Bridgend Community Centre, all are self-help groups, aiming through social interaction and skill-sharing to extend their abilities whilst having a jolly good time.

Since the New Year the Sew'n'Sews have made quilts for needful children not only in the U.K but in other parts of the world, particularly Malawi. They have also provided quilts for money-raising purposes both locally and farther afield, and have raised hundreds of pounds for charitable causes. They run excursions to quilt exhibitions and to visit other "quilting venues" and have a permanent but ever changing display of their own work in the lounge area of Bridgend Centre.

Meeting every Thursday morning, the first Thursday of every month is devoted to skills extension, in which any member who has learned a new skill undertakes teaching that skill to the rest of the group. North Ayrshire Council has also given a grant to the groups to employ 6 professional tutors to run workshops with the Sew'n'Sews over the next year. They have already had one workshop with Sally Webster of Largs in Discharge Dyeing and Free Motion Machine Stitching, and will be having their next in Quick Piecing and Combination Patchwork with Bonnie McKerracher.

The Creative Stitchers are a small group meeting every Wednesday morning but again the emphasis is on mutual support and skills-sharing. Immediate plans include an educational jaunt to view The Weavers Cottage. This trip is funded by North Ayrshire Council.

The Crafty Woman are a more recently formed group, who like the Creative Stitchers would welcome new members. They have recently made up a new and varied syllabus for themselves and at present are engaging in making up small desirable items for sale ate local Fetes to raise money for charity. They meet every second Tuesday evening.

More details will follow.
