Mealie and his brother Reidie who was taller but similar looking (their surname may have been Bernardo) ran the cafe when I arrived in Kilbirnie in 1962. They ran it for many years, and it was much later that the Quinns owned it.

Anne I was born in 1964 so have no knowledge of the cafe before about 69,70

Re Wee Meelie's cafe remember it well - favourite after tennis club closed each night also the 'chippie' where you could purchase a 4d or 6d bag of chips, that's two and a half pence or less in to-days money.

Aye those were the days.

Liz McCallum says

My pals and I used to love going to Wee Meelies cafe for peas and crisps and dandelion and burdock (ginger), we would listen to The Targets record on the juke box, little did I know I would end up marrying one of the band members and 38 years later we are still together.

Yes I remember Meelies cafe with the peas n crisps and the Rockola Jukebox.

Those brown wooden seats and the square tables with the wee shelf.

I tried to buy that jukebox but they wanted to much money for it.

Did Meelie not stay in the wee house next door until his passing????

A pleasant wee man .....used to whistle a lot and sing to himself lol

James Summers says

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
