This picture was taken at Stoneyholm Road, its my Great Grandfather, John Robertson, a coal merchant in Kilbirnie. Some might be familiar with his son, William (Wullie) Robertson.

Hi Danny Kerr here. I remember the coal man Makey Robertson Don't know if it is the same person you are talking about. I think he had fingers missing from his right hand.

I think John Robertson may have been a brother / relation of my Grandfather Jimmy Robertson, who was also involved in a coal merchants business at or near the old Kilbirnie railway station (too much of a coincidence for there to be no connection). As far as I remember there were quite a few brothers Geordie, Wullie, Eddie and of course Jimmy and (maybe) John. My grandfather Jimmy lived in Bridge Street (near where the pub known as the Bowery now stands). Jimmy was born in 1898 and died 1984. Looks as though the photo is from the early part of the last century?.

Faith,

The man in the photo is also my Great grandfather. William Robertson was my Grandfather and I remember him fondly. Your mum, Anne and my mum, May were sisters, so you are my wee cousin! I left Kilbirnie many years ago before you were born but I do remember Angela. Is my uncle Alex still living at the same house in Lyndsey Ave? I also know your dad, Bill and went to school with his brother Kenneth. Please tell them all that I was asking after them.

Thanks

Thanks for posting the photo, do you have any others?

Hugh,

You are correct about the connection with your family, my mum and yours, Jean? were related in some way, cousins maybe. You may not remember me but you do know my younger brother,  Russell or Gus. Hope you are well.

Jim,

How's things ? I remember you and Russell well, you were in oor Jim's class at Dalry High, I remember Janice and Winifred also. Anyhow, I' ve spoken to my mum Jean since posting my last comment, she has the same photograph of John Robertson that Faith posted (he was my mum's Grandfather too). She has an old photo of the Robertson family from the early 1900's, I will borrow  and post it ASAP.

What a great response, wasn't expecting that at all! First of all folks, since posting the horse and cart pic, i noticed ever so slightly, some lettering, very faded on the side of the cart. So, I zoomed in closely and found that it says 'James Robertson - coal merchant'! Well there ye go, my bad.

Daniel,

I cant be sure, but i think his fingers were in tact, but ill ask about this. After all, i thought his name was John :o)

Hugh,

Yeah, the picture is ancient. I wish i had a date on it. It looks turn of the century. I know that my Grandfather wullie, had brothers eddie and geordie. I don't know anything about the pair of them unfortunately.

Jim,

Hello cuz. Good to hear from you. Yep, Uncle Al is still here at lindsay ave, with my good patient self :) Sadly, i didn't get to know aunt May, but from what i gather, she was a gem. Mum always spoke really fondly of her. Well, I wish I had more pics like this, and fortunately, i do! I took a photograph of a very old picture, which i cant work out if its a painting, or one of those old touched up photographs. The way they would sometimes paint in the detail? Looks painted but smooth. Anyway, this pic is actually James too, and gives you a better look at the face. Best wishes to you and the family Jim, Ill send everyone your regards too :)

Faith,Jim,

This thing seems to be growing airms n' legs n' heids.

The photograph from approx' 1922 according to my mum :- Standing left to right as follows. George, William (Jim's and Faith's grandfather), Edward, Pate Graham ?? and John.

Seated :- John (Our great Grandfather), Jeannie ??, Esther (Our great grandmother).

Sorry, my mum doesn't know who the weans are.

My Grandfather Jimmy is missing from the photo.

Another wee point of interest is the inscription on our Great Grandparents gravestone in Kilbirnie cemetary which reads   "Where is it now the merry party that we knew so long ago"

Faith,

Thanks for your comments, I remember some great times with your mum and the rest of the sisters. Uncle Alex once had a few old cine films of all the family out the back of Lindsay ave could you ask him if he still has them and if he has could I borrow them to get them put onto DVD? Tell him it's for "wee Jim" (I wish) and that I promise to get them back to him in one piece.

My e-mail address is in one of the previous replies, drop me a line and let me know.

Thanks again

Jim
