A wee question

by Happy Bunny

My family are new to Kilbirnie and we have been told that the area we live in used to be where a school was sited (Ladyland School). Does anyone have pictures and info about the school and when it was demolished etc, would love to teach my grandchildren about the area as they are due to start school soon.

Hi Happy Bunny,

Ladyland School was built in 1849 at approx £112. It was the Parish School taking its name from Ladyland Barony. Mr Fulton was headmaster with one assistant teacher and four pupil teachers.Subjects; reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic, grammer, geography, British history, latin, french, drawing, bookkeeping and sewing. Will post picture when scanner is back working.

Hope this gives you a start to your project. Elizabeth Steele

HI HAPPY BUNNY. I ATTENDED BRIDGEND PRIMARY THEN ON TO LADYLAND SCHOOL UNTIL 1972 THEN WENT TO GARNOCK ACADEMY. WHEN I WAS THERE IT WAS MR. AND MAM. WYLIE WHO WERE HEADMASTER AND HEADMISTRESS , THEN IT WAS A MR. RITCHIE WHO BECAME HEADMASTER , THE MOST RESPECTED TEACHER THERE WAS MRS. LANG.   P.S. SHE WAS A GREAT TEACHER

I think the original building was eventually destroyed by fire in and around 2000 /01.

I was a retain firefighter at the time and it was a rather large fire with the inside totally gutted.

I went to Ladyland for a few months when our family moved to the town in 1976.  I remember when we went for lunch in the dining hall we had to sing a verse of a hymn - 'Let us with a gladsome mind, praise the Lord for he is kind, for his mercies shall endure, ever faithful ever sure.'  Also, one of the weans had the responsibility of running around the whole playground ringing a big bell when it was time to go back into the classes.

Have your say...

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
